Let Barkers Drive You On A Trip Down Memory Lane
A picture tells a thousand words however we will need more than a thousand to illustrate the rich history of the family business “Barkers of Preston” let us take you back to 1944.
From roots to Rootes………Barkers roots are firmly planted in the heart of Preston, their very first showroom displaying the original Rootes vehicles. In 1949 the motor industry was developing fast, Herbert Milton Barker used his insight and tenacity to be one of the first to offer the “Humber Hawk” at a price of £725 !
In the 1950’s motor vehicles went into mass production, demanding new modern showrooms and Barkers were situated on the well know Cuerden Corner, hence the name Cuerden Motors, offering the “ Humber” “Hillman” “Sunbeam” and “Singer”.
Barkers continued to grow with the market and in the 1960’s expanded by opening a new site in Manchester Road, which was “state of the art” in its day, bringing the “Hillman Hunter”, “Hillman Imp”, and Austin Cambridge.
In the 1970’s through to the 80’s the motor industry became a little more refined Barkers delivering some iconic vehicles such as the “ Renault 4, 5, 12 and 16” not to mention the “Chrysler Avenger Tiger” .
Barkers were proud to host Citroen in the 90’s developing their Ribbleton Lane site. Which brings us to 2017, having served multiple generations of Prestonions, growing from strength to strength and weathering uncertain times, SsangYong came calling and a new partnership was formed.
SsangYong was established in 1954 making a name for itself in the manufacture of durable no nonsense vehicles, they too have come along way. The sophisticated SsangYong vehicle today offers you a wide range of choice and quality. From the nippy cost efficient Tivoli, the Korando, famous with the caravan world for its towing capacity and added extras for comfort, the roomy 7 seater Turismo loved by families. In October the introduction of the new luxury Rexton, a vehicle that will offer the very latest technology at a very competitive market price. A vehicle which can truly handle anything the road requires. Not forgetting the commercial pick ups in a class of their own, in terms of price, warranty and refinement.
An impressive 75 years later Barkers doors are open and a warm welcome awaits .
